Private Forestry Summit

Fifty seven percent of Wisconsin’s 16 million acres of forests are owned by non-industrial private owners. How these 363,000 owners care for and manage their forests directly impacts the state and the health and welfare of its citizens.

There are many challenges facing the woodland owners and impacting their ability to sustainably manage their forests. The objective of the 2008 Private Forestry Summit was

  • To convene high level policy makers, legislators and partners influential in the forestry arena (link to list of invited organizations, etc)
  • To look at the benefits of sustainably managing the privately-owned forests of Wisconsin and the challenges that can get in the way of sustainable management
  • To identify opportunities and solutions that we, as a community, can implement to ensure the sustainable management of these forests and secure the wide range of ecological, economic and social benefits for the present and future generations.
  • To engage the forestry community in developing the opportunities that will move us forward toward sustainable management on all privately-owned forests will help.

The participants at the Private Forestry Summit identified over 100 opportunities to meet the challenges discussed. Numerous participants have volunteered to assist with the next step in moving these opportunities forward – developing an action plan that can be included in final report to the Council on Forestry.
